私が和訳しているので、間違っている可能性大ですが、そこはなんとなくニュアンスを感じていただければ幸いです(笑)

アレックスの出会いも「あの」イベントだったようです(^_-)-☆

 

エイサーとの出会い

It was the summer of 2015, and I had only been living in Japan for a few months.

My family were visiting from England, and we had spent a few weeks travelling around Nagano and Yamanashi.

A few days before they returned home, we went to see the sights of Shinjuku. Surprise!

The streets were full of people doing some strange performance.

We had discovered the 2015 Shinjuku Eisa Matsuri.

And yes, it was strange, but it looked like fun!

2015年の夏。

私が日本に住んで数ヶ月経ったころ、イギリスから家族が日本に来ました。

私たちは家族で数週間、長野と山梨を旅行しました。

そして家族が帰国する数日前に新宿へ観光に行きました。

そこで驚きました！

新宿の通りでは、不思議なパフォーマンスをしている人達がたくさんいました。

私たちは新宿エイサーまつり2015と出会っていたのです。

それは私にはとても不思議で、でもとても楽しそうに見えました。

 

昇龍祭太鼓との出会い

After my family returned to England, I wanted to learn more about what I had seen in Shinjuku.

There’s an Okinawan restaurant near where I live called “Shuzukan”; I often go there, and I knew the proprietors would be able to help.

The next time I was in, Mama-san told me about Eisa, and I was intrigued. On her recommendation, I went to another festival, and there I saw Shoryu Matsuridaiko for the first time.

Needless to say, I was impressed!

I wanted to start learning, so after the show I went to talk to the performers.

I asked them if there are any Eisa classes for beginners in Tokyo, and left with a time and place.

Now, my Japanese is not good, and wires often get crossed.

So when I showed up for the class I found… not a beginner’s class at all!

It was a practice session for Shoryu members.

I was surprised, but everyone was very happy to show me what to do.

Since then I’ve continued practicing with Shoryu.

The language barrier makes things more difficult, but not impossible, and my Japanese is slowly improving.

As I had initially suspected, Eisa is fun; but what I’ve since discovered is that Eisa people are also fun!

The people are, of course, the most important factor.

That’s why I hope to be part of Shoryu for as long as I live in Japan.

 

私は家族がイギリスに帰国した後、自分が新宿で見たものをもっとよく知りたいと思いました。

私が住んでいる場所の近くに「しゅうずかん」という沖縄料理のお店があります。

私は良くそこのお店に出入りしていて、店主なら私の疑問に答えてくれるだろうと知っていました。

私がお店に行ったときにお店のママさんがエイサーについて教えてくれ、とても興味を持ちました。

彼女に薦められ、別のお祭りに行き、そこで初めて見たのが「昇龍祭太鼓」でした。

言うまでも無く、私はとても感銘を受けました。

私もやってみたいと思い、ショーの後、出演者に話を聞きに行きました。

私は初心者の為のエイサーのクラスが東京にあるかどうかを尋ね、時間と場所を聞いて帰りました。

ただ、私の日本語はまだまだ上手ではありません。

しばしば、混乱する事があります。

教えられた場所に行って見たのは、、、初心者のクラスではありません！

昇龍祭太鼓メンバーの本格的な練習でした。

私は驚きました。

でも、みんな私が何をすれば良いのか教えてくれるので、とても満足でした。

その時から私は昇龍のみんなと練習しています。

言葉の壁はいろいろな事を難しくするけれど、決して不可能ではありません。

私の日本語も少しずつですが、良くなってきています。

私が最初に思っていた通り、エイサーは楽しいものでした。

でも、私がその後に感じたのは、エイサーのみんなといるのが楽しいという事。

仲間はとても大切な要素です。

日本にいる限り、私は昇龍祭太鼓のメンバーでありたいと思います。

 

自己紹介

I grew up amongst the sheep and ruined castles of beautiful, rural North England.

After graduating from school I studied physics and philosophy for four years at Oxford, before moving to Switzerland to work as a programmer, developing educational software.

After two years I changed job and moved to Japan, where I now work in algorithmic trading.

 

私は北イングランドの荒廃したお城とたくさんの羊たちに囲まれた美しい農村で育ちました。

私はオックスフォードで4年間物理学と哲学を学び、学校を卒業した後、プログラマーとして働く為にスイスへ移住しました。

そこでは教育ソフトを開発しました。

2年後に私は転職し、日本へ移住。

現在はアルゴリズム取引に関わる仕事をしています。
